Entrepreneurial Style Icons: Meet Nagina

Entrepreneurial Style Icons: Meet Nagina

Welcome to a brand new series about the mesmerizing stars of online business who are captivating us with their show stopping combination of style and branding.

SUPER STAR STYLE ICON NO. 1:

Nagina Abdullah

HER STYLISH BUSINESS:

Nagina uses the surprising power of spices to help women lose 10 pounds or more through her online program:

Spice Yourself Skinny.

She invented her unique method when she lost 40 pounds while working as a management consultant with 12 + hour days, unpredictable travel and 2 kids at home.

HER UNIQUE STYLE QUIRK:

Nagina’s washboard stomach has become her trademark.

She discovered that her clients needed a clear visual image of what they wanted for themselves and having a tiny waistline was their biggest dream.

It was important for Nagina to show off her own sexy, skinny body in her website photos, but how could she do that while still looking professional?

HER STYLE SUPER POWER:

Nagina is a wizard when it comes to using the power of her natural beauty. Her glamorous photos show her wearing full super model make-up with professionally blow-dried hair but the style is decidedly elegant and professional. She sticks to neutral colors in her make-up so her own natural coloring shines through.

Many women are afraid of wearing too much make-up in photos.

Then they’re disappointed with the result because their faces end up looking too plain.

The bright lights in the studio and camera technology tend to melt away your make-up so you can safely pile it on.

Your photo will often appear as a tiny square on your client’s phone so your features need to be enhanced for them to recognize you.

A trick to avoid looking like a drag queen when wearing heavy make-up is to stick with neutral colors like Nagina.

WHY WE LOVE HER:

Nagina epitomizes the ideal modern woman who is both smart, sexy, beautiful, and a good friend. We’re often torn between obligations in our business and with our family, but Nagina shows us that it’s ok to take time for ourselves. She teaches us that self-care creates more energy so we can better take care of our family and clients.

…and just like Nagina we want to look like a sexy super star doing it.

LOOK LIKE HER:

I live in a small town far away from beautiful boutiques so I often shop at inexpensive stores like HM and Zara. I love the fact that these brands have interesting trendy styles, but I hate the fact that the quality is so cheap.

Here’s how to find expensive looking pieces in any store:

Visit designer stores.

Familiarize yourself with what high quality clothes and accessories look like. Check out fabrics, seams, and details like buttons and clasps so you know what to be on the lookout for. Take a peek inside bags and garments since that’s where you often find hidden glamorous details.

Forget the cheap jersey.

(The soft fabric in T-shirts and yoga pants).

80 % of what you find at the mall is made of thin cheap jersey. You see it everywhere and it’s easy to think that this must be the way to dress because otherwise: Why would they sell it?
The answer of course is that thin jersey is inexpensive to produce.

Better brands have T-shirts and other jersey pieces in a heavier weight. Look for thick sturdy fabric and your clothes will look more expensive.

(Thin jersey will also make your body look bigger since it clings to even tiny bulges.

Choose woven fabrics.

I have bought some pretty skirts and bomber jackets at HM that people assume are exclusive designer clothes.

This is because I have hand-picked the most expensive looking items in the store. I usually only find a couple of pieces worth trying on since I want to buy clothes that look high end.

Woven fabrics are found in non-stretchy jeans, shirts, and dresses. They sometimes require ironing, but are definitely worth it since they make you look successful and sophisticated.

Tailor your clothes.

The key to looking like a star is wearing clothes that fit your body perfectly.

When you invest in a high-quality piece it’s worth spending a bit more to have a tailor take in the side seams to create a small waist or sew the perfect hemline to make your legs look gorgeous.

Pretty and Professional in the Heat

Pretty and Professional in the Heat

The first day of summer is absolutely magical!

Basking in the sun you feel the tension in your shoulders melt like ice-cream with strawberries, and all those cold, dark winter months evaporate from memory like cool morning dew from fresh green grass. Mmm. Life sure is wonderful!

Until…. you look down and realize that those sandals that served you so well during last year’s summer vacation just won’t cut it at today’s business lunch with your classy new client.

Your go-to work outfits would turn you into a sweaty mess in a matter of minutes and your summer wardrobe is just too beachy for a professional expert.

What on earth can you wear to meetings and conferences on sweltering days that were made for bikinis and sparkling drinks?

PALAZZO PANTS

These super comfy wide legged trousers are perfect for summer.

They should be roomy and airy and made from a natural fibre such as linen, silk, or cotton so that moisture is transported away from your skin. Make sure there isn’t too much fabric around the waist and hips because that might add bulk.

Luxurious or City Chic styling will keep you from looking too Bohemian for business: Elegant sandals (high or low) and a beautiful pedicure makes a huge difference.

Shorts and pants can be so much more comfortable than wearing a skirt since you avoid having your legs rub against each other.

SLEEVELESS JACKETS

When you want to be exquisitely elegant and formal you should try a sleeveless jacket. If you prefer to cover your arms it can easily be styled with a long or short sleeved top.

Platform sandals are perfect if you want a little extra height but still feel comfortable. The best kinds have airy rubber soles that give you a happy little bounce every little step you take.

My latest trick is to wear my workout tops outside the gym. I get basic shapes without big logos and style them with skirts and jewellery. They are perfect in the heat because they’re made of moisture transporting fabric that’s especially constructed to keep you cool when you’re sweating.

AIRY DRESSES & FLOWING SKIRTS AND TOPS

There’s nothing better than a cooling breeze on your skin so bring out some airy, flowy garments.

This look is perfect for a Beach Babe but might be a tad too bohemian for a business meeting.

You can easily wear your flowy skirt with a straight or basic top to create a balanced look.

A wide top can be worn with straight trousers or Capri pants.

Another trick is to add some professional looking accessories, and do your hair in a smooth style rather than a romantic one

CULOTTES

These short, wide trouser-skirts have been trendy for a while and they are the perfect option for a formal chic look in the heat.

The short and wide shape of culottes can make your legs look shorter so I absolutely recommend high heels or wedges to create balanced proportions

Then your cozy cocoon is shattered when you receive a scary email:

You’re invited to a networking event.

Eeeek. I have nothing to wear.
This time you’re not going to blend into the background by being one of the 100 women in a little black dress.

You’ll walk into that room and OWN it by looking so amazing that people can’t help wanting to talk to you.

Rock’n Roll Mom And Her Little Rebels

Rock’n Roll Mom And Her Little Rebels

“Don’t you dare turn the dial. Let me hear this song. I‘m gonna teach you kids about real Rock’n Roll.”

I’m on the highway with my car overflowing with rowdy little boys. My son’s in the passenger’s seat driving me crazy with his terrible DJ’ing switching between stations precisely when a good song comes on. Finally, there is some decent music to help me survive the day.

“The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire.”

“The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire.”

This is cool. Everybody’s rocking out.

Mmm. These Norwegian kids are actually learning some English from this. I’m such a good mom teaching kids valuable skills on the go while juggling family and business like a real power woman.

“We don’t need no water let the motherfucker burn.”

“Burn Motherfucker Burn.”

The car explodes with little boys screaming:

“Motherfucker. Ha ha. Did you hear that? Motherfucker!”

Oh holy shit. The kids are gonna come home cursing like adorable little death metal rockers because of me.

What’s next?

Piercing and tattoos?

My son won’t get a single play date ever again. He’ll be the cute kid with the irresponsible mother they have to protect their children against.

This might make me the black sheep of the neighborhood but I have decided to follow Chrissy Hynde’s example: stop pretending to be a responsible cookie baking kind of mother and instead fully embrace my inner rock’n roll mom.

Taking up smoking would just make me cough too much and maybe even puke, so how can I get into the rock groove as fast and easy as possible.

The answer of course is getting my dirty hands on the ultimate rebel garment: A leather jacket.

Now if I was a really bad mom I would of course go out and flirt with a bearded, tattooed guy just to steal his jacket, but since there’s still an ounce of goodness left in me I think I’ll go shopping instead.

Here’s a quick look at my favorite Rock Mom Leather Jackets:

You’re Too Old To Dress Like That!

You’re Too Old To Dress Like That!

Who do you think you are Hilde?!?

You can’t dress like that.
That dress is way too sexy for someone your age. Ever heard the expression “mutton dressed as lamb?”

My inner critic was getting all riled up and had even taken on a posh British accent since I finally had made it to London and was shopping on beautiful Regent Street.

I didn’t dare walk into the Karen Millen store. A gorgeous feminine palace full of sexy man-eater dresses that were just a tad too expensive. Not a place for a suburban mom like me.

I scraped some courage from the bottom of my purse, sneaked inside, and tried it on.

The dress fit me like a glove.

Still I wasn’t the type to dress like that. I was a respectable slightly boring mom wasn’t I? My young wild days were long gone.

Looking for some objective feedback I asked some cute, young American girls for their honest opinion. I couldn’t detect any deceit in their eyes when they said the dress was perfect, so I pulled out my credit card.
The Sexy Dress was left hanging all alone in my wardrobe for 2 months.

I wore on the first warm summer day and felt like such a fraud.

I was self-consciously pulling it down to cover my wrinkled knees and imagined people talking about me behind my back. “Look at her.”

The next time felt much easier and before long I was so at ease in it that I even wore it to work.

Now the dress is the star in my About page photo and it was worth every single penny.

I’m so happy I silenced that inner voice and took a chance on a new exciting garment that turned ME into a new exciting person.

We all have ideas about who we should be and how we should look, but are these old ideas really in our best interest?

Are we projecting a brave and powerful image to our clients?

Are we strong and inspiring role models for younger women?

How would YOU dress if you could look at yourself objectively and see yourself in the same positive light that other people do?

I bet you would be sexy, vibrant, edgy, power- and colorful!

Do you perhaps also have amazing garments crying in the closet because they never get to go to the party?

Or – have you longingly stared at that perfect dress in the store window and thought that it wasn’t for you?

I’m dying to hear your stories.
